Emanuel Swedenborg on the Guardian Angel, the Hierarchies and Demons

Emanuel Swedenborg was an eighteenth-century Swedish mystic and scientist who deeply explored the dynamics of the spiritual world and the spiritual beings who inhabit it. In his work 𝘈𝘳𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘢 𝘊𝘰𝘦𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘢, he discusses the guardian angel and emphasizes the angel’s role as a protector and guide for the human being. According to Swedenborg, our connection with the angels is so profound that there is not a single second in which we are not united with and guided by our angel.

He also describes the heavens as the body of the angels, emphasizing that humanity and the Earth live within the angelic hierarchy as a direct extension and embodiment of it.

“The angels taken collectively are called heaven, for they constitute heaven; and yet that which makes heaven in general and in particular is the Divine that goes forth from the Lord and flows into the angels and is received by them.”

However, Swedenborg did not speak only of heavenly angels. He also described dark entities that seek to influence humanity. He contrasted angels and fallen spirits, explaining that dark entities work through aggression and attack, while angels do not. Angels preserve and defend God’s creation, working as protectors while respecting human free will.

This leads more deeply into the mystery of the relationship between angels and humanity. In life, we are surrounded by both angels and demons, and both seek to work through the human being. Our guiding angel seeks to inspire us to rise to our true potential, offering guidance and protection as we become increasingly conscious. This task is difficult, however, because humanity is also exposed to fallen angels and the demonic world, which continually seek to draw human beings into their influence and control. In this way, the battle in heaven unfolds within every human being, and the soul of the individual is what is ultimately at stake.
