Rudolf Steiner recognized that every human being has a personal angel, often called a guardian angel in Christian esotericism. This angel is not only responsible for protecting the individual but also for inspiring them and moderating spiritual forces so that the person may one day become fully conscious of the spiritual world. In other words, the human being possesses organs for spiritual perception and already operates within the spiritual world, yet is not able to take full responsibility for spiritual life. For this reason, the human being has an angel.
The angel is united with the higher self of the individual until he or she develops spiritually to the point where the angel is no longer needed. In this way, the angel raises the human being to its own level. When this occurs, the angel frees itself and embarks upon another stage of life within the spiritual hierarchies.
Steiner describes this process as the development of spirit-self, a stage of spiritual initiation in which the individualβs astral body becomes purified. In this condition, the individual is no longer ruled by lower urges, attachments, and desires. A strong moral impulse guides their life, and material pursuits no longer inspire them. It takes many lifetimes to reach this stage of purity, and it is the personal angel that translates the immense life forces of Christ into the human being.
“What then is forming in man during the rest of his earth existence? It is something of which we have often spoken. We have said that man has a physical body, an etheric body, an astral body and an ego and that he is now occupied in transforming his astral body so that it gradually becomes spirit-self. He is working on his other members as well, but the essential task of earthly existence consists in the full development of the spirit-self. The Angels have developed it already, they had developed it when Earth-existence began, and thus the Angels in the hierarchies of evolution are the spirits which guide this task of manβthe transforming of the astral body into the spirit-self.”

What the angel facilitates within the human being is described by Steiner as clairvoyant pictures or scenes. These scenes are also known as the classical images of initiation seen painted on many temple walls. They are the very scenes imagined in myths and fairy tales. It is the angel that has facilitated these images in which he recreates the spiritual world in material life.
“Under the guidance of the Spirits of Form (Exusiai) the Angels form pictures. Unless we reach the level of Imaginative Cognition we do not know that pictures are all the time being formed in our astral body. They arise and pass away, but without them there would be for mankind no evolution into the future in accordance with the intentions of the Spirits of Form. The Spirits of Form are obliged, to begin with, to unfold in pictures what they desire to achieve with us during Earth-evolution and beyond. And then, later on, the pictures become reality in a humanity transformed.”
