The word angel originates from the Greek angelos (ἄγγελος), meaning messenger, and is primarily used within Western spiritual systems. An angel is a spiritual being that resides in the supernatural world or spiritual realm. Angels are responsible for carrying out the hidden tasks that sustain every aspect of the world. They are the forces behind the seasons, the elements, and time, and on an individual level, every person is understood to have a guardian angel that assists them throughout life.
Angels are not unique to Western traditions. All spiritual traditions recognize beings equivalent to angels, though they are known by different names and emphasize different aspects of their nature. In the Hindu tradition, an angel is called a deva, and these beings are understood as the forces behind the natural world. The various gods of the Eastern traditions also describe different classes of angels that guide humanity during specific eras of its development.
In Japanese Buddhism, spiritual beings called Tennin appear as feathered beings who inhabit the spiritual world but often manifest through natural environments such as rivers, trees, or stones. In early pagan traditions, unusual natural formations or strange activity in the environment were commonly understood as the dwelling places of particular angels responsible for observable effects in the physical world.
In Sufism, angels are called malāʾika and are described as being made of light, while humans are made of clay and jinn are made of fire. In the New Age movement and in ufology, angels are sometimes described as orbs, non-human intelligences, extraterrestrials, or beings of light.
In ancient Greece and Rome, angels were referred to as gods and were associated with the planetary spheres. These traditions recognized that different classes of angels corresponded to different spiritual planes, or heavens, delineated by the orbits of the planets. Temples were erected to specific classes of angels and to their initiatory powers. The Temple of Apollo, for example, functioned as a solar temple dedicated to the solar angels.
Each spiritual tradition acknowledges the existence of angels, and there are many commonalities in how they are described and approached. The primary difference between traditions lies in the state of human consciousness at the time angels were encountered and understood. As human consciousness evolves, our perception and understanding of angels also change, reshaped by shifts in awareness and experience.
